Also known as karayal, black cumin, black caraway, and black onion seed. Has a pungent, bitter taste and a faint strawberry-like smell. [Arabic = habbat albarakah • Hindi = kalonji] There is a great deal of confusion about the many names of this seed. It is not actual black cumin from India (thin wiry brown seed with same crescent shape as real cumin). In Islam, referred to as a cure all called Black Seed in the Qur’an (Koran).
